Solar Regulators
What are Solar Regulators / Solar Charge Controllers?
Solar electric power systems are essentially very simple. You have a device which converts sunlight into electrical energy (a photovoltaic panel or 'solar panel') and this is used to charge up a battery. The battery allows you to collect energy when the sun is shining and store it until needed.
This simple picture is complicated by the limitations of the battery. If you leave the photovoltaic panel connected to a battery, the battery will slowly charge up. If you are putting in more energy than you are taking out, then the battery will eventually become fully charged. If this continues, the battery will become overcharged and be damaged by corrosion of it's plates and loss of electrolyte. To avoid this, some sort of charge regulator / solar regulator is used to stop the charging when the battery is full.
Some charge controllers / solar regulators have additional features, such as a low voltage disconnect (LVD), a separate circuit which powers down the load when the batteries become overly discharged (some battery chemistries are such that over-discharge can ruin the battery). Some charge controllers may also monitor battery temperature to prevent overheating. Some charge controller systems also display data, transmit data to remote displays, and data logging to track electric flow over time.
Pulse width modulation (PWM) and maximum power point tracker (MPPT) technologies are more electronically sophisticated, adjusting charging rates depending on the battery's level, to allow charging closer to its maximum capacity.
PWM vs MPPT
The MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) vs PWM (Pulse width Modulation) question is not always straight forward as it very much depends on the conditions under which charging is taking place.
Under SPECIFIC conditions, an MPPT can have more efficiency % gains than a PWM regulator can. However when charging a 12v battery from a 12v solar panel, these gains are not present so an MPPT regulator in this scenario is unnecessary.
MPPT is good if you need to run cables from an array over a long distance as it allows you to string the panels together in series to make higher voltage panel strings (therefore lower power loss due to cable resistance, because of lower currents).
Other than that, MPPT is useful if you don’t want to (or can’t) match the panel specifications to the battery (e.g. on a motorhome you may want to use some uncommon, high output panels since the roof space is limited).
Be aware that the % gains claimed for MPPT (other than the above couple of examples) are not likely to be ‘real world’ (e.g. How many hours during the day do your panels work at 25°C or less ?!). The hotter the panels become –the maximum power point voltage decreases and gets close to a typical battery voltage, therefore wiping out most (if not all) the gain an MPPT unit will give.
The other issues with MPPT (particularly for boats at sea) is that it’s not always easy to bypass the regulator should a fault occur (e.g. due to lightning) since the panels and battery are not matched (e.g. high voltage panels and lower voltage battery). With a series regulated system (like the Plasmatronics regulators), the system can be kept running by connecting the panels directly to the battery and manually regulating.

Plasmatronics Solar Regulators
Plasmatronics is an Australian company which specialises in the design and manufacture of electronic regulating and metering devices for solar power systems.
Plasmatronics was established in 1985 and they proudly design and manufacture their product in Australia.
As one of the earliest designers and builders of Solar Power Regulators in the world, Plasmatronics Pty Ltd is the preferred choice for Remote systems throughout Australia. They have also designed and built systems for use throughout the world. Examples of their major projects can be seen in the Philippines, Egypt, and Nepal. They had the worlds first Chinese language solar power regulator, which is in use in mainland China. Plasmatronics also have strong technological and commercial connections to Solar Regulator and BOS designers and manufacturers in Europe, India, China, and the USA.
Plasmatronics Pty Ltd is committed to ongoing design and development of its product. Their products are constantly being updated and improved, and they are committed to innovation. Plasmatronics are committed also to quality improvement, and they have technical staff employed to liaise with customers, so that they have constant feedback on how to improve both the design and make of the product. They are proud of the fact that they support our product throughout its life, and not just through a warranty period. Plasmatronics Pty Ltd is a wholly Australian owned Company incorporated in Victoria.
The Plasmatronics charge controllers are the industry standard, field proven way to take control of your battery based renewable energy system.
With tens of thousands of units in service, in a huge variety of applications, the Plasmatronics Regulators has a well-earned reputation for versatility and reliability.
The four stage charging algorithm incorporating true Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) constant voltage control gives you complete control over the whole charging cycle. All charging voltages and times are adjustable over generously wide ranges. This allows you to customise the charging regime to suit just about any custom requirements which you, your customer, or your battery manufacturer may have. Of course, in most cases you can choose from one of our four default programs, which cover most types of batteries and systems extremely well.
Plasmatronics PL series controllers have plenty of other tricks up their sleeves as well. They can control generators, night lights, back-up battery charging, many timer applications, and heaps more.
Plasmatronics PL20, PL40 & PL80 Solar Controllers
The PL series of charge controllers give you the freedom to operate your solar electric system the way you want to.
They offer complete control over the charge cycle, plus an unprecedented amount of useful information about current and past performance.
PL regulators help to protect the system with a built in low battery disconnect switch. In addition, the versatile event controller can switch power on or off according to criteria set by the user. This allows the PL to do extra tasks such as switching a light on at night or keeping a water tank full by operating a pump when needed.
The user can select either Pulse Width Modulation or slow speed switching. Regulation can be done in both series and shunt modes. Other features include backup generator control and charging a second battery.
The PL Series is designed for Caravan / Motor-home / Camping systems, as well as Commercial and industrial stand alone applications.
Informative:
A comprehensive LCD display gives battery voltage, charge current, Ah in and out, load current, battery temperature (with optional sensor) and more. System performance data is available for the last 30 days. The controller remembers what happened, even if the user might not.
Well Connected:
With the optional PLI interface and PLCOM software, the user can access all the functions from a remote computer. All data can be read, and all settings adjusted.
Versatile:
Because it can handle 12, 24, 32, 36, and 48V systems, and be set to deal with any battery requirements, you can use it in almost any battery charging job. It may be the only regulator you will ever need to stock. (Higher voltages available on special order).
Features:
Adjustable: All settings are adjustable, and are stored in non volatile memory so you don’t lose your custom set up if the unit needs to be disconnected from the battery.
- Display: User friendly LCD display. Each number has a label.
- Energy metering: Daily Load and Charge Ah plus State of Charge, all recorded for 30 days.
- Four Stage Regulation: Boost, Absorption, Float, and Equalisation available as appropriate for the battery type.
- History: Records Charge and Load Ah, Max and Min battery voltages, SOC, and Float times for the last 30 days. You can tell how much energy was really collected and used. This history can be very useful when diagnosing a system problem.
- Generator Control: A sophisticated generator controller is included, with four different modes of control, and a quiet time option.
- Event Control: A powerful event controller/timer allows the Load and/or General Purpose terminal to turn on or off a wide range of loads (e.g. pumps, lights, motors etc.), under a user specified set of conditions.
- Alarm: There is an adjustable high or low battery voltage alarm output, which can drive an external alarm device.
- Second Battery: When the main battery is full, the PL can supply a signal to switch a relay, so that some or all of the array can charge a second battery. The second battery charging is also controlled.
- Remote control: The PLM remote display allows all functions to be accessed from up to 100 metres away. Fits in a standard light switch mounting plate.
- Data Comms: Communication with a computer is possible via the optional PLI interface. This allows fast downloading of all data and adjustment of settings. Can be used via a modem for remote sites etc.
- Protection: Protected against short circuits, reverse flow, and lightning. Low battery load disconnect function built in. Current limiting in the event of over temperature or over current. Full conformal coating protects against corrosion.
- External Shunts: Up to two external shunts can be added using optional DC isolated PLS2 shunt adaptors. Inverter and/or battery charger current and other external currents can be included in the Ah readings and SOC.

Plasmatronics PL Series Regulator Accessories
PL Series Remote Monitor
The PLM remote monitor is a device which allows remote user access to a PL series charge controller. It shows exactly the same information as the PL screen, and the PLM button behaves in exactly the same way as the button on the PL. This means you can use the PLM for everything you would normally do at the PL itself, only in a more convenient or second location. You can access all the same information and adjust all the same settings as you can on the PL itself.
New Features:
There are two features in the PLM which are not found in the PL. These are LED back-lighting, and an audible/ visual Alarm. The latest model also has a membrane keypad instead of a through-panel button.
LED Back-lighting:
The LCD display is back lit with yellow LED light. The display and back-light will turn off if you have not pushed the button for 16 minutes (just like the PL display).
Alarm (Audible/Visual):
There is an alarm which is driven by the alarm (ALRM) function of the PL. This is a low voltage alarm. The alarm is capable of giving an audible alarm from the built in buzzer, or a visual alarm by flashing the back lighting, or both at the same time.
Limitations:
The PLM can be used with up to 100 metres of cable, and up to two other PL accessories. For example you could use the PLM with 1xPLI and 1xPLS2 or with 2xPLS2, but not all three at the
same time.

PL Series Shunt Adaptor & Shunts
The PLS2 shunt adaptor is designed for use with PL series solar charge controllers. It allows the controller to measure charge or load currents which do not go though the controller. This allows inverter or generator currents to be included in the controller's display. Note: The Amp hour reading and SOC will not be meaningful unless ALL the currents in the system are measured.
The PLS2 shunt adaptor measures the current in a current shunt and converts that measurement into a digital form. This data is then sent to the PL controller.
The PLS2 is bi-directional. This means it can report net load current or net charge current from a single shunt. In many systems, one PLS2 can be used where two PLS's were required. Because the PLS2 is bi-directional, a load/charge setting is not required. Two PLS2s can be used in one system, but their readings cannot be displayed separately. In a two PLS2 system, one PLS2 (the slave) sends its reading to the other PLS2 (the master). The master adds this to its own reading and sends total charge and load data back to the PL. This allows you to measure the currents in two different shunts. As a bonus, any flow opposite to what's assumed will be measured correctly. For example, inverters driving reactive loads often return current to the battery during part of each cycle. This current was ignored by old PLS's but is counted properly by PLS2s.
Three shunt sizes can be handled directly. These are 50A/50mV, 100A/100mV and 200A/75mV.

PL Series RS232 Computer / Modem Serial Interface
An RS232 level serial interface is available which allows the PL to communicate with a computer or be remote accessed via a modem. This is a quick way to load settings into the PL or extract performance data. All of the data is remotely accessible, and all settings can be adjusted. Software (PLCOM) is available for IBM compatibles to make this easy. Data can be cut and pasted into a spreadsheet or other applications.
The PLI is an RS232 interface for PL series regulators. It allows data communication between a computer and the regulator (via a modem if necessary). It allows serial communication at speeds of 300, 1200, 2400 and 9600 baud. The speed (baud rate) is selected by two jumpers on the circuit board. The computer (or modem) baud rate must be the same as the baud rate selected on the PLI for communication to occur. Select the fastest speed that the connection will support. Start at 9600 baud and if it does not work or has too many errors, then reduce the speed until the link works reliably.
To prevent problems due to ground potential differences, the PLI uses optical coupling. This means that there is no electrical connection between the computer side and the PL side.
The energy to operate the PL side is drawn from the battery bank connection of the PL controller. The energy required to operate the computer side is drawn from the computer serial port connection. A small amount of power will be drawn from the computer's TX, RTS and DTR lines.
The interface can be powered from the TX line only (i.e. with RTS and DTR not connected to the PLI) if there is a shortage of connecting wires available. In this case, the on board DC/DC converter needs some assistance to start up. This is done by sending a short burst of data on the transmit line (for about 100 milliseconds - send a byte with mostly zeros in it). After it starts up, it will remain running until the computer serial port powers down. The software supplied will automatically send a transmission burst until the PLI powers up and answers the computer back.
RPLI | PL Computer Interface | $125.00 | ![]() |
PL Series Synchronisation / Alarm Unit
The PLA allows up to 3 PL series charge controllers to work together. The PLA provides a common communication interface, four alarm or control channel outputs, and can control a separate load control unit called an LS1. The PLA makes system performance data retrieval easier by providing a PC compatible way of collecting system total information.
The PLA can be used on its own or as a manager for one, two or three PL controllers. The PL controllers can be PL20, PL40 or PL60 versions in any combination. However, for proper operation, the system voltages of all PL controllers and the PLA MUST be set to the same voltage.
The PLA keeps the individual PL controllers synchronised. When one controller changes charge mode, then all the other controllers follow that change. This means that charging is properly shared between controllers. Without this synchronisation, a multi controller system can be trapped in the boost mode indefinitely if there is insufficient charge current from any one controller to reach the boost maximum voltage setting (BMAX).

A temperature sensor is available which allows the PL to adjust its regulation voltage settings to compensate for variations in battery temperature. The setting TCMP is used to select a temperature profile, which determines how this compensation is achieved.
The PL can automatically sense the presence of a temperature sensor if one of the auto-sense profiles is selected. If operation at temperatures near zero is common, it is better to use the non auto sense profile
The PLT is a plastic-cased unit for direct attachment to the battery wall.
The PLTB has a bolt-on lug for attaching to either battery terminal.
The unit connects to the T+ and T- inputs on the green terminal block under the PL cover

Plasmatronics DINGO Series Regulator Accessories
Dingo Series Remote Monitor
The Dingo Remote Control (DRC) is a device which allows remote user access to a Dingo series charge controller. It displays exactly the same information as the Dingo screen, and the DRC button behaves
in exactly the same way as the button on the Dingo controller. This means you can use the DRC for everything you would normally do at the Dingo itself, only in a more convenient location. You can access all the information and adjust all the settings just as you can on the Dingo itself.
New Features
The DRC has two additional features to those on the Dingo. These are automatic LED back- lighting and an audible Alarm.
LED Back-lighting
The DRC display is back lit with yellow LED light. The back-light will turn off if you have not pushed the button for 5 minutes. If the display is off, then the first button push will
turn the display back on, but not do anything else. Subsequent button pushes work as nor- mal.
Audible Alarm
The DRC has an audible alarm which is activated by outputs from the Dingo. The alarm will be activated when the red led is on or flashing. This mirrors the alarm led on the Dingo. To avoid false alarms, the alarm condition must be present for 30 seconds before the audible alarm activates.
The alarm will be on if: a. The battery voltage is below the alarm setting or b. The load has been disconnected or is in the process of disconnecting or reconnecting.
The alarm can be silenced by pressing the button.
Once the alarm has rung, then it will not reactivate unless the alarm condition has first been removed by the Dingo for a least 30 seconds.
Limitations
The DRC can be used with up to 100 metres of cable. It can be added to a Dingo system with up to 5 other Dingo accessories (not including switch blocks or MPPT devices).

Dingo Series Shunt Adaptor & Shunts
The DSA shunt adaptor is designed for use with Dingo series solar charge controllers. It allows the controller to measure charge or load currents which do not go though the controller. This allows inverter or generator currents to be included in the controller’s display. The Amp hour reading and StateofCharge screen will not be meaningful unless all the currents in the system are accounted for.
The DSA shunt adaptor measures the current in a current shunt and converts that measurement into a digital form. This data is then sent to the Dingo controller. On the Dingo screen, the current read by the adaptor is added to the internal current. Each adaptor current can also be seen separately by a long push on CHRG or LOAD. The DSA shunt adaptor is bidirectional. It can report net load current or net charge current from a single shunt. A load/charge setting is not required. Up to four DSA's can be used together in one system.
Three shunt sizes can be handled directly. These are 50A/50mV, 100A/100mV and 200A/75mV.
