Inverters
A power inverter, or inverter, is an electronic device or circuitry that changes direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC). The input voltage, output voltage and frequency, and overall power handling depend on the design of the specific device or circuitry. The inverter does not produce any power; the power is provided by the DC source.
PURE SINEWAVE INVERTER :
This is the best output waveform you can get out of an inverter and all appliances are able to run off it without interference or overheating. Some of its advantages are as follows:
- Output voltage waveform is pure sine wave with very low harmonic distortion and the same as the ESKOM supply
- Inductive loads like microwave ovens and motors run correctly, quieter and cooler
- Reduces audible and electrical noise in fans, fluorescent lights, audio amplifiers, TV, Game consoles, Fax, and answering machines
- Prevents crashes in computers, unreadable print outs, and glitches and noise in monitors
- It can be efficiently electronically protected in overload, over-voltage, under-voltage and over temperature conditions
MODIFIED SINEWAVE INVERTER :
The Modified sinewave inverter has limitations. These are some of the appliances that may experience problems when running off Modified Sinewave inverters:
- Laser printers, photocopiers, magneto-optical hard drives
- Some fluorescent lights with standard ballasts
- Power tools employing "solid state" power or variable speed control
- Some battery chargers for cordless tools
- Produces sometimes interference in some television sets
- Digital clocks with radios
- Sewing machines and Fans with speed/microprocessor control
- Medical equipment such as oxygen concentrators
- Modified sinewave inverters are usually only protected by standard fuses which, under normal circumstances, are not always fast enough, therefore they are by far more vulnerable to failure.
It is definitely advantageous to use a pure sinewave inverter as a pure sinewave inverter can basically run any type of equipment in contrast to a modified sinewave / step square wave inverter.
VA RATING COMPARED TO WATTS:
Both watts (W) and volt-amperes (VA) are units of measurement for electrical power.
Watts refer to “real power,” while volt-amperes refer to “apparent power.
Some companies use VA rating for their products as this often represents a higher value than the Real Power provided by the unit which is in Watts. This leads consumers to beleive they have a higher rated product than they actually do. Always check Inverters to see whether they are using Watts (Real Power) or Volt Amps (Apparent Power) to advertise their products. i.e 500VA is around 350W so you are not geting a 500w Inverter unless the continuous output of the inverter states 500 Watts.

Victron Phoenix Smart Inverter

Proven reliability
The full bridge plus toroidal transformer topology has proven its reliability over many years. The inverters are short circuit proof and protected against overheating, whether due to overload
or high ambient temperature.
High start-up power
Needed to start loads such as power converters for LED lamps, halogen lamps or electric tools.
ECO mode
When in ECO mode, the inverter will switch to standby when the load decreases below a preset value. Once in standby the inverter will switch on for a short period every 2,5 seconds
(adjustable).
If the load exceeds the preset level, the inverter will remain on.
Remote on/off
A remote on/off switch or relay contact can be connected to a two pole connector.Alternatively, the H terminal (left) of the two pole connector can be switched to battery plus, or the L terminal (right) of the two pole connector can be switched to battery minus (or the chassis of a vehicle, for example).

Victron MultiPlus-II Inverter Charger
The MultiPlus, as the name suggests, is a combined inverter and charger in one elegant package. Its many features include a true sine wave inverter, adaptive charging, hybrid PowerAssist technology, plus multiple system integration features.
MultiPlus Inverter/Charger - Lithium Ion battery compatible.
The MultiPlus-II combines the functions of the MultiPlus and the MultiGrid. It has all the features of the MultiPlus, plus an external current transformer option to implement PowerControl and PowerAssist and to optimize self-consumption with external current sensing (max. 32A).
It also has all the features of the MultiGrid with built-in anti-islanding and an increasingly long list of country approvals.
A MultiPlus, plus ESS (Energy Storage System) functionality
The MultiPlus-II is a multifunctional inverter/charger with all the features of the MultiPlus, plus an external current sensor option which extends the PowerControl and PowerAssist function to 50A resp. 100A. The MultiPlus-II is ideally suited for professional marine, yachting, vehicle and land based off-grid applications. It also has built-in anti-islanding functionality, and an increasingly long list of country approvals for ESS application.

PowerControl and PowerAssist - Boosting the capacity of the grid or a generator
A maximum grid or generator current can be set. The MultiPlus-II will then take account of other AC loads and use whatever is extra for battery charging, thus preventing the generator or grid from being overloaded (PowerControl function). PowerAssist takes the principle of PowerControl to a further dimension. Where peak power is so often required only for a limited period, the MultiPlus-II will compensate insufficient generator, shore or grid power with power from the battery. When the load reduces, the spare power is used to recharge the battery.
Solar energy: AC power available even during a grid failure
The MultiPlus-II can be used in off grid as well as grid connected PV and other alternative energy systems. It is
compatible with both solar charger controllers and grid-tie inverters.
Two AC Outputs
The main output has no break functionality. The MultiPlus-II takes over the supply to the connected loads in the event of a grid failure or when shore/generator power is disconnected. This happens so fast (less than 20 milliseconds) that computers and other electronic equipment will continue to operate without disruption. The second output is live only when AC is available on the input of the MultiPlus-II. Loads that should not discharge the
battery, like a water heater for example, can be connected to this output.
Virtually unlimited power thanks to parallel and three phase operation (not available for the 8k and 10k models)
Up to 6 Multis can operate in parallel to achieve higher power output. Six 48/5000/70 units, for example, will provide 25 kW / 30 kVA output power with 420 Amps charging capacity.
In addition to parallel connection, three units of the same model can be configured for three phase output. But that’s not all: up to 6 sets of three units can be parallel connected for a 75 kW / 90 kVA inverter and more than 1200 Amps charging capacity.
On-site system configuring, monitoring and control
Settings can be changed in a matter of minutes with VEConfigure software (computer or laptop and MK3-USB interface needed). Several monitoring and control options are available: Cerbo GX, Color Control GX, Venus GX, Octo GX, CANvu GX, laptop, computer, Bluetooth (with the optional VE.Bus Smart dongle), Battery Monitor, Digital Multi Control Panel.
Remote configuring and monitoring
Install a Cerbo GX or other GX product to connect to the internet. Operational data can be stored and displayed on our VRM (Victron Remote Management) website, free of charge. When connected to the internet, systems can be accessed remotely, and settings can be changed.

Latronics IRM Series Industrial Rack Mount Series
The pure sinewave IRM Series inverters are Latronics most versatile and customisable inverter range. The IRM Series is a professional 19" rack enclosure with a wide range of options to suit individual applications. A true sinewave output with excellent surge power enables the operation of demanding appliances, such as fridges, microwaves, washing machines and pumps.
Pure Sinewave Waveform:
- Robust design that protects itself against AC shorts.
- Latronics IRM Series Stand-alone inverters are backed by our three year manufacturer’s warranty.
- Sophisticated circuitry provides protection against overload, short circuit, over temperature and battery low voltage shutdowns.
- Fully selectable between 50/60Hz via a set of internal dip switches for international use
- Auto-start circuitry automatically switches the inverter ON and OFF with applied appliances. The Autostart is an important feature as it maximises valuable battery capacity.
- Sensitivity of the Autostart can be easily adjusted to either start small appliances or run continuously.
High Efficiency Toroidal Transformer:
- Toroidal transformers provide outstanding efficiency and durability.
- When sized correctly, high surge rating allows easy starting of motors and high inrush current devices.
DC Circuit Breaker/ Battery Isolator Switch:
- DC Circuit Breaker protects the inverter and cables from becoming a potential fire hazard under fault conditions, as well as providing a point of isolation from your batteries when switched OFF.
- The circuit breaker is designed for ease of operation and safety. If the Inverter shuts down due to Overload, Undervolts or Overvolts it can be reset.
- Full 3500V AC/DC isolation.
- Galvanically isolated.
- High quality, high current, heavy duty DC leads for low loss power delivery.
LED Status Indicators:
- Power indicator (green LED).
- This LED flashes when in Standby mode (i.e. no loads connected). When a load is applied the LED will illuminate continuously to indicate that 230V AC is being supplied.
- When the Inverter is switched on all 3 LED lights light up for 1 second while the microprocessor performs a start up and system check procedure.
- A large range of options from custom voltages and alarm contacts to vibration proofing and conformal coatings are available.
- Massive Inrush and Overload Capability.
