What is the difference between a Deep Cycle Battery and a Starting Battery?
A deep-cycle battery has the ability to be deeply discharged and charged many times during its service life. It is designed specifically for powering electrical equipment for long periods of time. An automotive or starting battery is designed for brief bursts of high current and cannot withstand more than a few deep discharges before failure. This is why it is unable to start your car if you accidentally leave the lights on more than a couple of times.
Can I use my deep-cycle battery as a starting battery?
Some deep-cycle batteries can be used for engine starting, but starting batteries should not be used for deep-cycle applications. A deep-cycle battery may have less cranking amps per pound than a starting battery, but in most cases a deep-cycle battery is still more than adequate for the purpose of starting an engine in emergency situations. We would not recommend using a Deep-Cycle battery in place of a Starting battery.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of AGM, Gel, and Flooded / Wet Cell Lead Acidand Lithium LiFePO4 Deep Cycle Batteries?
Lithium batteries offer the best performance with zero maintenance, but are the most expensive. Flooded lead acid batteries are the most cost efficient but need regular maintenance. AGM and Gel batteries require zero maintenance and offer better performance than FLAs, but do not provide as much power as lithium batteries.
AGM batteries are sensitive to depth of discharge. This means the deeper the battery is discharged, the fewer cycles it has. AGM batteries are generally recommended to only be discharged to 50% of their capacity to maximize their cycle life. This limited depth of discharge (DOD) of 50% means that more batteries are required to achieve the desired capacity. This means more upfront costs, and more space needed to store them.
A lithium (LiFePO4) battery, on the other hand, is not affected much by depth of discharge so it boasts a much longer cycle life. Its DOD of around 80% means fewer batteries are required to achieve the desired capacity. Fewer batteries mean less space needed to store them.
While lithium batteries may have advantages, AGM batteries still have proven time-tested technology as they have been around much longer. AGM's also have the upper hand when it comes to charging in freezing (below zero degrees Celsius) temperatures - albeit, with a bit of a hit to its efficiency. Unlike AGM's, lithium batteries require temperature regulation for use in below-freezing temperatures.
Lithium batteries have the added bonus of not containing the heavier lead-acid found in AGM's, therefore, are much lighter. Since their DOD is 80-90%, lithium a battery bank generally occupies less space. (Less batteries are required for a desired capacity.) Because of this, lithium batteries can save quite a bit of volume and weight in comparison to the traditional AGM's.
The depth of discharge of a battery refers to the percentage of the battery that has been discharged (used) relative to its overall capacity within a charge cycle. A lithium battery with an overall capacity of 100Ah (amp hours) will give you 80Ah (or discharge to 80%), while AGM's offer 50Ah (or discharge of 50%) before needing to recharge.
Based on these numbers, AGM's are the better option for those who use their RV only a few months at a time, and lithium batteries are preferable for those who are off-grid all the time.
Connecting in Series (Increases Voltage)
In connecting batteries in series the positive terminal of the first battery is connected to the negative terminal of the second battery and so on down the string.
The interconnecting cables must be of equal length and resistance to insure equalization of the load. All batteries in the string will receive the same amount of charge current, though individual battery voltages may vary.
High voltage strings of batteries in series should be limited to twenty 6 volt or ten 12 volt batteries when a single constant voltage charger is connected across the entire string. Differences in capacity can cause some batteries to overcharge while others remain undercharged thus causing premature aging of batteries. It is, therefore, not advisable to mix batteries of different capacities, make, or age in a series string.
Connecting in Parallel (Increases Capacity)
When charging batteries in parallel (positive terminals are connected to the positive terminal and negative terminals to the negative), all batteries in the string will receive the same charge voltage but the charge current each battery receives will vary until equalization is reached.
Charging in Series
Lead-acid batteries are strings of 2 volt cells connected in series, commonly 2, 3, 4 or 6 cells per battery. Strings of Power-Sonic batteries, up to 48 volts and higher, may be charged in series safely and ef ciently. However, as the number of batteries in series increases, so does the possibility of slight differences in capacity. These differences can result from age, storage history, temperature variations or abuse.
Fully charged batteries should never be mixed with discharged batteries when charging in series. The discharged batteries should be charged before connection.
When a single constant voltage charger is connected across an entire high voltage string, the same current ows through all cells in the string. Depending on the characteristics of the individual batteries, some may overcharge while others remain in a slightly undercharged condition.
To minimize the effects of individual battery differences, use batteries of the same age, amp hour, and history and, if possible, charge in strings of no greater than 24 or 48 volts.
Charging in Parallel
When connected in parallel, the current from a charger will tend to divide almost equally between the batteries. No special matching of batteries is required. If the batteries of unequal capacity are connected in parallel, the current will tend to divide between the batteries in the ratio of capacities (actually, internal resistances).
When charging batteries in parallel, where different ratios of charge are to be expected, it is best to make provisions to assure that the currents will not vary too much between batteries.

Active balancing is a technique that improves the battery life by maximizing the capacity of a battery pack with multiple cells, ensuring that all of its energy is available for use.
Working principle:
The capacitor fit transfers the charge carrier, and the balancing work is started when the balancing board is connected to the battery.
The original brand new ultra-low internal resistance MOS, 2OZ copper thick PCB, balancing current 0-5.5A, the more the balancing current, the smaller the battery.
Reserve the wiring position of the dormant switch, the operating current in dormant power-off mode is less than 0.1mA, and the equilibrium voltage accuracy is within 5mv

Battery Box 12V Portable Power
This 12V battery box features all the common connections that would typically be required for outdoor recreation power needs.
It is capable of holding a deep cycle battery up to 125Ah (sold separately), which can be secured in place with the supplied webbing strap.
Once fitted with a battery, the box can be used to power campsite equipment and connected to a solar panel for recharging.
The box comes with carry handles so it’s easily portable and is fitted with a variety of connections for powering your portable appliances.
These include two 50A Anderson plugs, insulated bolt terminals (fitted with wing nuts) and a 12V car accessory socket with over current protection in-built.
For smaller devices such as phones and tablets two USB ports are provided with up to 2.4A charging current.
It’s also fitted with a voltmeter to help monitor the battery level.

UniLug 2 Up Battery Terminal Lugs
Two Up battery terminal lugs are purpose designed for dual battery installations where it is not desirable to cut or modify the factory battery leads or terminals.
The concept allows factory strap type battery terminals to be fitted to a special tapered adaptor at the same time providing an additional terminating post to connect auxiliary batteries and/or ancillary equipment.

Battery Load Test:
- 1. Connect the RED clamp to the Positive (+) battery terminal or post.
- 2. Connect the BLACK clamp to the Negative (-) battery terminal or post. If testing a battery in the vehicle, ensure the engine and all loads are’OFF’.
- 3. Note the batteries open circuit Voltage (OCV).
- 4. Press the ‘LOAD’ switch for 10 Seconds. Before releasing the ‘LOAD’ switch read the meter to determine the battery’s condition or approximate capacity (For 12V batteries 200-1000CCA) & note the battery’s Voltage while under load (Load Volts).
Charging System Test (12 Volt Vehicles)
- 1. Connect the RED clamp to the Positive (+) battery terminal or post.
- 2. Connect the BLACK clamp to the Negative (-) battery terminal or post. Ensure the load tester and cables are clear of any moving parts.
- 3. Start the vehicle’s engine and operate at a fast idle speed, keep all accessorises, lights & heater fan ‘OFF’.
- 4. Note the battery voltage, which should be in the green section of the charging test, between 13.6 - 15 Volts, this indicates that the alternator’s regulator is functioning correctly.
- 5. Turn ‘ON’ the vehicle’s head lights, heater fan or any other accessories, the battery voltage should remain higher than 13.6 Volts, indicating that the alternator is generating sufficient current.
