Battery Chargers and Power Supplies

A battery charger or recharger is a device used to put energy into a secondary cell or rechargeable battery by forcing an electric current through it. The most important property of a battery charger is that it reaches the exact voltage during the charging cycle. If voltage is too high, the battery boils. The battery becomes unusable due to dried-out cells and crevice corrosion, which occur due to high acid concentration and overheating during charging. If voltage is too low, you end up with an incompletely charged battery that will lose more and more capacity until it gradually becomes unusable.

A power supply is an electronic device that supplies electric energy to an electrical load. The primary function of a power supply is to convert one form of electrical energy to another and, as a result, power supplies are sometimes referred to as electric power converters.

Dolphin Marine Battery Chargers

Dolphin marine battery chargers were developed by the French manufacturer Power First and launched in 1995. The first generation chargers, many of which are still in operation today, featured cutting edge design and technology and were quickly adopted by professional and leisure boaters alike.

The second generation was launched in 2001. The electronic technology shifted to surface mount design and considerable focus was placed on the aesthetics in order to combine both form and function. It proved to be a successful recipe and was reflected in the Dolphin chargers’ growth around the world in the following years.

The third generation series concept was to develop the product along two separate lines; an elementary range for lower power applications and a professional range for high power demand. Thus the Premium and Pro ranges were born, the former released in 2011 and the latter in 2012. The new range is the culmination of many years of experience gained from an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the marine industry.

CTEK was founded in 1997 and is a sister company of Creator Teknisk Utveckling AB (a leading design and development consulting firm), which was founded in 1982.

CTEK began developing its battery expertise as early as 1992, when a leading battery manufacturer hired Creator for battery research and development. interVOLT SVC Series voltage converters were developed after considerable research in the marine industry. The requirement for a high quality, 24VDC - 12VDC marine grade voltage converter for this specialised market was immediately evident. To describe the new second generation SVC switchmode voltage converters as an innovation would be an understatement.

With digital over analogue control the GEN II SVC offers previously unheard of performance and a myriad of features to assist the installer and user.

Just for starters there is the new and unique operator interface which allows the user to control and monitor items such as voltage output and actual current load. The unit features pre-emptive alarms to warn of impending shutdown which can also be monitored remotely. Multi-stage fan cooling enables the unit to run in the hottest of environments and it can now be mounted in any position as it no longer relies on convective cooling. It can also be remotely isolated at the flick of a switch and a separate, independent output provides a constant low power supply for items such as security systems.
